Back to School
I’ve gone back to school
In August of 2012, I started in back in school. I am enrolled in an intensive 2 year program to become an Ayurveda Practitioner. What made me decide to do this?
About 4-5 years ago I started having signs of perimenopause. I was gaining weight even with eating the same amount. I’ve always been quite, um, “intense” but my mood swings were getting wider and wider. I’ve never been forgetful, but darn it if I could focus enough to remember what I was doing earlier in the day.
Being a student of natural health, I knew enough to suspect some sort of hormonal imbalance. With so much knowledge of natural health options, I rarely go to the doctors office. But this time, I had a purpose. I’d like to discuss my changes with a doctor and see if I could get some blood tests run and get answers. I have a good relationship with my doctor (she knows that I won’t take any drugs), so I discussed my issues with her. She really didn’t see the point in any hormone tests since what I described sounds like about 99% of her female patients. But I still knew something wasn’t right. We did the hormone test and all came back “normal” according to the labs and my doctor. I’ve come to find out that most females are so out of range, the labs don’t have accurate test ranges to even gauge your results by. So, I leave the Doctors office without any real answers and certainly not any solutions. So it’s up to me and my own intuition to sort things out.
Over the following years, I’ve worked with Medicinal Essential Oils to manage hormonal changes and boost my adrenals (another culprit in fatigue). I was much better, but still, things were progressing far enough.
So in the spring of 2012, I was introduced to Ayurveda. I’d heard of it and followed Deepak Chopra for years, but never knew formally what it was. After a bit of research, I started looking for Ayurveda in Wisconsin.
I found an Ayurveda Practitioner, Cheryl Silberman at Kanyakumari Ayurveda & Yoga Wellness Center in my area and made an appointment. Wow, what a difference. Not only did she listen to me and “believe” me but had years of experience of successfully dealing with all of the issues I’d been having. Through several appointments, we worked together and developed a plan for getting me and my body back on track. Since I took to this new knowledge with such gusto, she suggested that I look into studying Ayurveda in depth.
I enrolled in classes in the Fall of 2012 and have fallen deeper in love with this ancient healing art. With all the past experiences I’ve had in “alternative healing,” why Ayurveda? It is the only healing art that truly focuses on mind, body AND spirit. Ayurveda teaches us to develop our physical body, our mental body and our spiritual body all equally important to living a long, healthy, happy life. Now that is something I can stand behind. A complete system of healing that works towards balance in all aspects of life and actively sets out to prevent diseases at the first sign of an imbalance. This is a way of life versus a quick fix. This system of healing teaches us how to make simple choices each day that closely align with our desire to life a long, healthy and happy life.
So, you’ll hear a lot more about my journey into Ayurveda. In the meantime, I’ll be bugging you to check your pulse, bless your food and make time for meditation.
